VIVIAN TAMM


Much of design is grounded in a logic of predetermined form and function, where matter is shaped toward one intended outcome. My work challenges this deterministic approach by investigating what becomes possible when animate or inanimate matter is given a degree of agency in authoring its own becoming. Reframing formation from something that happens to matter to something that unfolds through it opens up a design space where the designer’s role shifts from designing a final state to shaping a field of conditions for form and function to emerge. 

I have explored this design space across scales and contexts, from internationally exhibited and award-winning research projects to material- and product development in the LignoLight research group, and façade engineering at Priedemann Façade Lab.

I hold a B.A. from the Weißensee Academy of Art and Design Berlin, where I graduated with the Mart Stam Graduation Award and EXIST Women scholarship. Based between Berlin, Delft and Atlanta, I’m currently pursuing an M.Sc. in Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft and Georgia Tech as an Honours student and DAAD scholarship holder.

In nature, the most sophisticated materials derive their performance through functionally graded internal structures. Replicating this in engineered materials remains a fundamental challenge. This project investigates how the adaptive growth behaviour of plant roots can be spatially programmed to produce functionally graded internal architectures. Through designing the growth substrate (hydrogel matrices with defined mechanical and nutrient gradients)  the project explores how growing conditions can be used to program root development across three dimensions: spatial biomass distribution, fiber alignment, and root morphology.

#5 From Transformation to Mechanical Performance 




In conventional 3D printing, standard slicing introduces critical weaknesses when print paths cut across curved geometries. By contrast, 4D printing’s “print flat, transform 3D” logic turns this anisotropy into an advantage by naturally orienting continuous print paths tangentially to the final shape. This project investigates the dual role of layer architecture in 4D printing, optimizing the passive layer’s raster angle and layer ratio to balance shape actuation against mechanical load capacity. To achieve this, a fully integrated, in-situ 4D printing workflow was developed for the first time, enabling fully automated actuation directly on the printbed. Tested on a compliant spring, the optimized configuration achieved a threefold increase in load-bearing capacity with crack-free ductile collapse compared to conventional 3D prints, while  reducing both material consumption and overall fabrication time by one third.

Most façade technologies treat solar shading and solar energy harvesting as seperate objectives that require individual solutions. This fragmented approach creates mechanical redundancy and limits the productive and holistic use of the building envelope. Inspired by heliotropism, 90° investigates whether both functions can emerge from a shared geometric behaviour rather than from isolated systems. By combining thin-film photovoltaics, smart material actuation and computational simulations, the project proposes a low-complexity responsive façade system that balances energy generation, thermal control, and occupant comfort through embodied material behaviour.

#3 Cellular


Contemporary façades are typically designed to resist biological colonization, framing living organisms as a threat to material intergrety and architectural appearance. Cellular challenges this paradigm by embedding ecological processes into the material logic of the building envelope. The research develops a porous ceramic façade element that passively stores rainwater and creates localized humid zones capable of supporting airborne algae. Rather than dictating nature to exist in a certain way, the system designs the environmental conditions from which a living patina can emerge, using adjustable surface properties to guide its grwoth. By embracing the building envelope’s co-evolution with its environment, the project reframes biological growth as an inherent architectural performance rather than a form of material degradation. The evolving microecology contributes to air purification and evaporative cooling, while allowing the façade to develop a unique visual identity over time.

#2 LICHTREFLEXE 


       
Conventional adaptive façades typically rely on centralized sensing, computation, and mechanical actuation to coordinate large responsive elements. Lichtreflexe investigates an alternative paradigm in which complex environmental adaption emerges from the collective interaction of simple, locally responsive elements. The research combines organic photovoltaics with shape memory alloys to create self-actuating elements. As each element individually reacts to local lighting conditions, the system gives rise to a high-resolution, complex adaptive behaviour that continuously reconfigures the building envelope. By embedding sensing, actuation, and decision-making directly into the material system, Lichtreflexe explores how distributed material intelligence can transform architectural surfaces into autonomous environmental interfaces that simultaneously regulate solar exposure, energy harvesting, and daylight transmission.

#1 Bone Fix 


Bone fixation plates rely on standardized geometries that are adapted to individual anatomy through manual shaping and sizing. This project explores the use of patient-specific anatomy as the direct input for the computational fabrication of customized fixation plates. Using 3D scans of fractured femora, the research establishes a parametric workflow in Grasshopper that generates patient-specific fixation plates. The geometry, screw placement, and density distribution are computationally generated from the individual bone morphology. Material density is spatially varied according to the fracture region, enabling localized control of plate stiffness and load transfer.
